Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, The Relationship Between Hazardous Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Need For Coping Skills Education

Posted in: Miscellaneous

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? More than a few alcohol abuse professionals claim that alcohol advertisements constructed by the media are an essential reason for the spread of teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol dependency specialists believe that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of beer, wine, and liquor in our society. Still other alcohol dependency consultants articulate that more than a few of our teenagers engage in harmful drinking because of the increased stress that they feel.

From a slightly different standpoint, because both parents in quite a few families are employed, the lack of parental supervision obviously has to play a significant part in the rise in youth alcohol abuse. And as a final point, a variety of alcohol dependency consultants assert that the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse is due, in part, to our lenient society.

One element of teenage alcohol abuse that appears to be somewhat incomplete in the substance abuse research literature, then again, is the lack of educational programs that teach students how to further develop their coping skills so that their excessive and hazardous drinking behavior is drastically lessened or gotten rid of. Stated differently, scientific research has demonstrated that there is an indirect relationship between poor coping skills and unhealthy drinking.

For all intents and purposes, this means that the worse the coping skills, the higher the rate of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a correct line of reasoning, why isn't coping skills training a primary part of the academic core curriculum in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?

Let us construct a scenario for the purpose of clarification. Let us imagine a society in which students are trained how to achieve sound coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets demanding, individuals who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more creative manner, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into practice.

Stated differently, students who exhibit good coping skills will be more able to think logically and exhibit superior decision making as opposed to teens are deficient in good coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of alcohol abuse.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, furthermore, if teens not only obtained exclusive coping skills education but also obtained a first class education that focused on the long term and short term negative consequences associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these kinds of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills education, it is advocated, would help students avoid the obvious allure of underage drinking and, as a consequence, would radically decrease the excessive drinking behavior displayed by teenagers in our country.

There are surely several valid reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in an abusive manner. Such a tricky subject demands an all-inclusive and more applicable response by our educators, parents, politicians, and students so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more productive and responsible way instead of resorting to hazardous and abusive drinking to solve their difficulties.
