A Young Gentleman Needs Therapy For His Severe Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Drug Addiction And Alcoholism

Posted in: Miscellaneous

Nearly three months ago I had dinner with a forty-three-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from extreme depression, has relationship problems, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As articulated by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship issues.

As explained by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he essentially has no drive to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete two semesters of grad school in Spanish history.

Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an example of a person who can look within and see his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something constructive about these issues. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit the very bottom before he gets addiction rehab that leads to lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how counseling would help his chemical dependency. For starters, there are quite a few newly created doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to understand the fact that there is absolutely nothing constructive about substance abuse and abusive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy situations is the route to shattered relationships, a premature death, legal problems, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, and poor work and school performance. Fourth, treatment for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him cope with these medical conditions more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.

Due to the fact that Benjamin lacks the determination to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he badly needs some hope for a more productive existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he needs for his mental illness and chemical dependency and stick with his treatment program.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't comprehend this right now but if he can learn how to stay away from alcohol and drugs via drug and alcohol rehab and get the counseling he requires for his acute depression, he can redirect his life and start living with direction, passion, and with self-respect.

Better relationships, positive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to seek the medical treatment he needs, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a healthy and drug and alcohol-free manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about life.
