Linda and Frank have been in a dating relationship for four-and-a-half years. They met while enrolled in the same Russian history class at a relatively large, rural, private liberal arts college located in the Midwestern part of the United States. While they were basically good friends at first, they eventually started dating when they were in their first year of college.

Because both of them came from very strict backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the experimental stage when they first started to date. As the time progressed, however, they began to go to more football bashes, happy hours, keg parties, and sorority and fraternity parties. As a result, they progressively began to drink more as time passed by.

After they graduated, they both found employment in a large city located around sixty-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally determined that they would move into the same apartment together.

With any significant transformation in a person's life there is commonly something that triggers the particular change in question. For Frank and Linda the thought of buying a new house and having children was this "trigger." To put it simply, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank started to critically evaluate their drinking behavior and the alcohol long term effects on their health. As an illustration, they started to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their irresponsible drinking.

Would their irresponsible and abusive drinking negatively affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending a large percentage of their money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?

All of these questions clearly indicated the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to comprehend that they couldn't continue their excessive and heavy drinking if their dreams, goals, and aspirations were to be brought to fruition.

Once they came to this conclusion, they told their drinking friends about their their plans to start a family, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this moment forward so that they could start realizing their future aspirations, hopes, and dreams.

Surprisingly, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been reexamining their lives and concluded that their life-styles were too centered around drinking. They also believed that they would have to change significantly if they were to become more accountable and show more care for their health, their careers, and for their goals in the next five or ten years.

After their heart-to-heart discussion with their pals about their goals, aspirations, and dreams, Linda and Frank actually started to have more significant relationships with all of their friends. The fundamental reason for this was the fact that all of them were on the same wave-length regarding their irresponsible drinking and their short and long-term aspirations, goals, and plans.
