A Ninth Grader Drinks Excessively With His Buddies, Experiences Alcohol Poisoning, And Finds Out That Paying Attention In Class Can Affect Your Life

Posted in: Miscellaneous

Andy was a ninth grader who typically seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and usually wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The main difficulty with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were consequently able from a legal framework to operate a car and to drink alcohol.

Andy, however, had a difficult time accepting the truth that as a fifteen-year-old person he should not be drinking. In fact, on the other hand, Andy commonly drank with his high school pals after school, particularly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy decided to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his buddies was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some wine, beer, and wine coolers, Andy and all of his friends went to a public park and drank for just about two hours.

After drinking approximately five bottles of beer, Andy started to feel woozy and then vomited. When he passed out on the football field, one of his pals called 911 for immediate assistance. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Andy, they found out that Andy had been suffering from alcohol poisoning symptoms. In short, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.

After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was in reality astonished to discover that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had about five or ten drinks. When he explained this to the attending healthcare professional at the hospital, however, the physician told Andy that drinking five or ten alcoholic beverages over a two or three hour time frame could in reality be substantially more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The physician further conveyed how too much alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's respiratory system and that when this occurs, an individual can expire.

This was the first signal to Andy that he was drinking in a hazardous manner and that there is a price tag for such behavior. The physician told Andy that he was a lucky person because he almost perished from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The physician also talked to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehabilitation for Andy. His parents were relieved that Andy was all right and told the healthcare practitioner that they would get Andy alcohol therapy.

While talking to his parents, Andy told them that there must be a good reason why he did not perish and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the most ironic part about the entire drinking occurrence was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the last six week grading period at school.

At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Since he almost died, on the other hand, he felt that he should have listened more intently in health class and applied what he had learned to his daily living.

Andy told his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to school and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not paying closer attention to a topic that was as important as learning about alcohol poisoning.
