A Health Teacher Teaches Her Pupils About The Importance Of Alcoholism Signs

Posted in: Miscellaneous

Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most under financed private high school in the district. Although she had been teaching for only four years, she had already established a reputation as an instructor with instructional techniques that encouraged and stimulated her students to learn and to think.

For instance, one Friday morning at 8:30 she addressed her pupils and articulated the following: "For the next two weeks we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will positively demonstrate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol addicted person, but the more signs that a drinker manifests, the stronger the probability that she or he is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."

Miss Jackson then informed the class members that each person would be responsible for studying four alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other class members via a thirty minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to study the list and rank the top nine alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After roughly ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and informed the students in her classroom that after she assesses the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked the students in her class to look over the data on the piece of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, concerns, or questions. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually everyone in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was noticeable that the students had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism authorities. As an illustration, just about every person in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, namely, "Do you feel unusually ill when you quit drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the pupils in her classroom why this answer was the most accurate indicator of alcoholism. She highlighted the fact that the key difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

Fundamentally this means that when an alcohol addicted person all of a sudden stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the person who is alcohol dependent, the students started to grasp the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and motivated the students in her class to stop and think about a noteworthy social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
